Programs
The Gender and Sexualities Studies Institute brings together faculty and students from across the university involved with the Gender and Sexuality Studies graduate certificate and the Gender Studies undergraduate minor, as well as those teaching or taking courses in the history of feminist thought and action; masculinity studies; gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender studies; and queer theory.
The Gender Studies minor
The Gender Studies minor is offered through Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts but is a university wide initiative.
In this interdisciplinary program, students look at the culturally constructed idea of sex difference in different contexts and the way gender and sexuality are renegotiated over time. Students explore a central facet of identity that profoundly influences the structures of society. Gender Studies is an interdisciplinary area of study that draws its courses from across the university and features substantial public programming and opportunities to explore gender through the arts. In Gender Studies Minor, you investigate:
- The history of feminist thought and action
- Social justice, labor issues, and global politics
- Gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender studies
- Queer theory
- Trans studies
- Masculinity studies
- The intersections of gender with race, class, and sexuality
- International gender scholarship
For students who are deeply invested in issues of social justice, courses in Gender Studies offer a way to understand the ideologies, social patterns, and images that shape our world.
